The wildflower phenomenon on the West Coast of the country (north of Cape Town) is an annual event but the drama of the spring veld is determined by the winter rains so can be unpredictable. Most years there is a glorious expanse of colour in an otherwise arid region. Timing is everything – visits can be too early or too late, often starting end of July and running through September with no guarantees. These vistas are balm for the soul – and a “bucket list” must.
